Caernarfon Youths 52 - Bethesda Youths 14

Caernarfon 52 - 14 Bethesda

Playing their first home game of the season, on the back of a convincing away win to Llangefni, this years batch of Youths came up against local rivals Bethesda at the Morfa on Saturday. Anticipating a tough encounter the home contingent were not to be disappointed with the visitors putting pressure on the home sides defence from the opening whistle. The first seven minutes saw three penalties awarded to Bethesda and eventually saw them encamped on the home sides try line. With Caernarfon seemingly unable to get the ball in hand things were looking ominous until a mistake by the away side allowed the Cofis to relieve the pressure with a series of swift passes finding winger Jack Davies in space. A searing run by the winger saw him ground the ball for what the watching faithful thought was the first score of the day. Unfortunately, play was belatedly called back for a foot in touch in the home sides half and the scores remained level.

With the weather gradually improving, so did the homes sides confidence and it was only a matter of minutes before a similar move, once more out of defence, saw Davies again stretch his long legs and cross the whitewash, giving the home side a somewhat undeserved lead. With centre Josh Eden adding the extras play resumed with the visitors again in the ascendancy and a clever kick by the ever inventive Bethesda winger, Dafydd Williams brought an infringement by Caernarfon and a penalty try award.

With the scores again level it was Caernarfon's turn to put pressure on the visitors defence and from a lineout inside their half and some excellent inter play the ball found it's way into the hands of number eight Llew Williams who crashed over to restore the home sides lead. With the kick again successful the Cofis began to play with a bit more purpose and within minutes had extended their lead, on this occasion slick passing finding the ball in the hands of centre Eden who crossed over in the corner. This was to be the last score of the half giving the home side a flattering 19 - 7 lead.

Playing down the slope in the second half and with Caernarfon seemingly determined to run the ball at every opportunity the pressure was soon to build on the visitors defence. A resulting scrum inside the visitors twenty two soon saw flanker Llyr Evans drive over the line for a much deserved try. The re-start again saw Caernarfon encamped deep in the visitors half and a resulting scrum saw elusive scrum half Rhys Williams pick up and score under the posts.

The visitors now seemed to have accepted defeat and further tries were to follow, firstly flanker Evans and then scrum half Williams completing their braces. With Eden adding his fifth and sixth conversion of the day and time running out, Caernarfon could have been excused for resting on their laurels and settling for a comfortable victory. No one had told number eight Williams however, and another powerful run by the imposing forward gave him his second of the day.

With the final whistle imminent there was just time for one further score, this time to the visitors. Winger Williams was again the instigator when an inventive sideways kick gave the Bethesda backs all the space in the world to pick up the final seven points of the day.

There will undoubtedly be tougher games to come this season but the omens are clearly good with this talented young team having amassed 115 points in their first two games.
