Caernarfon 6 - Nant Conwy 10

The score line in this North Wales League Division 1 encounter may suggest a dour enough encounter but what was witnessed was in reality so contrasting. Both teams and every individual gave an excellent account of themselves, playing at pace throughout with defences strong and organised for most of the match. Nant secured the win by being a little more dominant at the breakdown with a few of the most experienced players marshalling and cajoling all around them effectively.

Nant had the best of the opening exchanges and the pressure finally told on the 15 minute mark when a rehearsed lineout ploy saw a take being returned to the tramline channel for scrum half  Ellis Fôn to collect before offloading to Tom Oliver the hooker who squeezed over in the corner.

The Cofis responded very positively and were soon back in contention when Aled Jones was successful with a well struck penalty minutes later. Numerous individuals in Cofi colours upped their performance, both second rows, Rhys Thomas and Ilan Davies drove purposefully with number eight Mac Jones a constant threat. However a few hurried and rushed passes resulted in lost possession at crucial moments. The Cofi scrum was also functioning well but despite the majority of possession coming their way the Nant defence stood resolute and opportunities for the Cofis within the danger zone were very limited.

Replacement prop Pedr Jones featured prominently at the beginning of the second period with an added Cofi  penalty opportunity just drifting wide. What could have resulted in a one point advantage soon became a seven point deficit when a speculative cross field kick was hacked on by onrushing wing Gethin Roberts who then won the chase to ground before a long delay ensued prior to the score being granted. The momentum turned in Nant's favour for a period with centre Steff Horan making one telling break. Ifan Lloyd Jones as usual was also prominent in both defence and attack, thus not allowing the Cofis any opportunity to sustain phase upon phase possession.

Cofi fullback Iwan Evans however once broke out of defence to put the home side on the front foot and a high tackle call resulted in Guto Pierce bisecting the post to double Caernarfon's points tally with ten minutes to play. Nant however were within a whisker of securing the win minutes later when the white line was crossed only for a double movement to be signalled. This inspired the Cofis for one last charge from a line out close to the try line but as had happened all too often during the game the wisdom of back rowers Gareth Davies and in particular Carwyn Ellis were at hand to form a water tight barrier in order to see Nant triumph..
