Bae Colwyn 17 - Caernarfon 37

Colwyn Bay 17  Caernarfon  37.

Games like this one because of uncontested scrums appear to lack one vital ingredient, this being the ability to tire the opposition forwards and therefore create more space to attack in open play. Caernarfon, on more than one occasion thought that they had done enough to build up a reasonable cushion but found a resilience within the home squad that was difficult to subdue until the final quarter.

The opening exchanges were quite evenly fought with Bay stand off Pat Atkinson looking dangerous and creative from the off. His first effective break led to a rolling maul that caught the Cofis offside and he duly dispatched the penalty to open the scoring. This spurred the visitors into action with Dom Yau placing the ball behind the Bay backs and captain Iolo Hughes full of aggression and hungry for the ball. On ten minutes Caernarfon were level when a not rolling away call saw Guto Pierce bisect the posts then a lineout steal by industrious Derfel Thomas and a sniping run by scrum half Gareth Patchett led to the Cofi taking the lead as a result of another penalty from the boot of Pierce. The cool head of Atkinson kept the Cofis at bay when the pressure was on but a pass after committing the defence from Yau saw centre Dafydd Lloyd Hughes canter towards the line on 20 minutes to extend Caernarfon's lead to eight points.

Cofi prop Armando Morgan was showing good hands and number eight Mac Jones was gaining greater influence on proceedings. However the Bay retaliated with good thrusts from centres Tom Williams and Dave Hocknell and after a few goal line charges Pat Atkinson was able to extend and score on the half hour and together with his added conversion Colwyn Bay were back within a point.

Caernarfon began the second half with purpose seeing Mac Jones break from the half way line and bulldoze his way to the line, showing a turn of speed not expected from a loose forward. Guto Pierce again added the conversion, a feat he repeated minutes later when Yau again freed Mac Jones to run in from twenty yards and establish a fifteen point cushion.

Young, enthusiastic Cofi flanker Ancel Davison was replaced by stalwart Paul Rowlands, twenty one years his senior following an accidental clash, but the enthusiastic element didn't wane.

Yet again the home side refused to admit defeat and fought back with the contribution of flanker Lloyd Jones of value. A line out resulted in a rolling maul and hooker Dylan Hughes was able to wriggle free and score with Atkinson again adding the extras.

It was only during the final ten minutes that Caernarfon could have been fairly sure that victory was theirs, this following a line out take and a flick in mid-field releasing man of the match Mac Jones for his third try of the afternoon. Pierce again added the extras to establish a fifteen point cushion.

Despite promising charges by prop Elgan Jones during the final ten minutes Bay failed to camp in the danger zone and the final act saw Dylan Gwyn release Iolo Hughes before the final inside pass saw centre Carwyn Roberts complete the seventy yard move and bring the scoring to an end with Caernarfon victors by 37 points to 17.
