Caernarfon continued with their winning form with a four try to win victory against a tough Llangefni side. This was an evenly contested battle with the Caernarfon backs adding that clinical edge with far more penetration when going forward.
Once again Caernarfon’s defence worked well as a unit and went a long way to securing the win. Kelvin Morris got the scoreboard moving within three minutes with a well taken penalty kick. It was the backs who started the move for the first try, when they broke from deep with Dylan Gwyn showing his pace showing a clean pair of heels to his opposite wing. With a clever kick ahead to the line, Gwyn was pulled back and the penalty awarded. The penalty was quickly taken and offloaded to Mark Vaughn who charged over for the score. Llangefni pulled back a penalty through fullback Arwel Roberts.
Caernarfon struck back with a well taken try through Centre Gwilym Hendy. The opportunity came from Rhys Evans delivered quick off the top ball in the lineout, quickly spun out to Hendy to power over for the score. With Morris adding the extras Caernarfon held a healthy 3-15 lead. Ill discipline set in and Caernarfon conceded a series of penalties which Roberts slotting over to reduce the deficit to 9-15. Llangefni upped their game and piled on the pressure, but it was Caernarfon who delivered the killer blow. The Caernarfon scrum was under pressure on their own 22, but an excellent pickup and break from Rhys Evans saw defence turned into attack. The pack provided the vital support to recycle quickly and the ball was sent out wide for wing Dylan Gwyn to race over for the score, with Morris adding the extras. It was deep into injury time when Llangefni were finally rewarded for their efforts when No.8 Iestyn Dafydd barged over for the try. With Roberts adding the conversion the half time score was 14-22 to the visitors. The second half was a much tighter affair with little chances on show for either side. The crucial bonus point try came on sixteen minutes when there was a comedy of errors on an attacking Caernarfon lineout. The ball eventually ending up in the hands of Rhys Evans who picked up the loose offering and went over for the score. With Morris adding the extras the lead was a healthy fifteen points.
Llangefni continued to pressure, but lacked invention and were all too often cut down by the Caernarfon defence. Caernarfon were happy to pin Llangefni back forcing them to counter from deep. The final whistle was greeted by the faithful travelling supporters celebrating the 14-29 win, whilst the home crowd will look back on their inability to convert pressure into points.
