Caernarfon U16s won a hard fought encounter against Rhuthin by 26 vs 7 on Sunday. Caernarfon hadn’t played rugby since early Dec. but despite this they started well, with Gareth Pritchard prominent amongst the forwards in matching the strong Rhuthin pack in all aspects of play. Jac Evans scored the first try when he followed up a kick ahead to win the race to the touchdown. Aled Jones converted to give a score of 7 vs 0 at half time.
The second half was an even affair until Tomos Jones, playing for the first time at fullback, broke through the Rhuthin defence to score under the posts. Then came the move of the match. The forwards won fast ruck ball and released flyhalf Aled Jones who made a scorching break and delivered a great 30 yard pass to Jac Evans who finished with style by scoring in the corner to make it 19 vs 0.
Aled Jones crowned a fine individual performance by scoring the Cofis final try under the posts which he duly converted. However, the hosts had the last word when the Rhuthin forwards scored a consolation try after their only period of sustained pressure on Caernarfon’s try line.
A fine team display from the Cofis gave them a great way to start 2010.
