CAERNARFON
will be high on confidence already after opening the season
with a 10-try super show at Newtown on Saturday.
The Cofis
have had a tough time at the Recreation Ground in the past but
they made no mistake at the weekend as they controlled the game
from start to end to claim a first WRU League Division Four
North win.
Caernarfon
were full of attacking intent, with the forwards offering plenty
of support and they wasted no time in scoring their first try,
Gwilym Hendy setting up his brother Gethin Hendy for a touchdown
in the corner.
The second
arrived quickly afterwards when Rhys Evans controlled the ball
well at the base of the scrum to score a pushover try.
Newtown
had their moments too, causing the visitors to infringe and
that led to a spell in the sin bin for flanker Paul Rowlands.
The hosts
took advantage of their numbers, full back Danny Hill kicking
two penalties.
However,
the Cofis were the team on top and further tries came via outside
half Kelvin Morris – who kicked three conversions during
the first half – and wing Hywel Iorwerth.
Going into
the second half with a 34-6 lead, Caernarfon were firmly in
charge of the match and picked up where they had left off at
the re-start.
Allen Mark
claimed two well-taken tries, the second of which was down in
large part to good work by forwards Rhys Thomas and Owain Parry.
Young Gethin
Hendy added two further touchdowns to complete an impressive
hat-trick and man-of-the-match Rhys Evans claimed his second
five-pointer.
Debutant
winger Rhydian Jones put Newtown out of their misery with Caernarfon’s
final try, finishing off an excellent move.
Morris successfully
kicked three of his side’s conversions during the second
period.
